Streaking Indiana
A 20 game win streak is extended as a 19 game losing streak ends! Plus the Colts benefit again from injuries and penalties. And much more on this week's Indiana Sports Podcast, HOOSIER BEEF!
Toby: Welcome back, beefers. This is Hoosier Beef. And today is a good day in the state of Indiana. Our teams went 3-0. Boilers snap a streak. Hoosiers keep a streak alive. And now the Colts are 2 2, heading back to the United States. I'm Toby Baldwin, Slick, and alongside me is the general, Jason, what a week we had. We had your Hoosiers going out. To the Scataway, New Jersey. Dominating once again. Next week we'll see if they're gonna be playing anyone significant. But they went into Rutgers beat them forty seven to fifteen to extend their win streak to twenty one games, which is the third longest in Big Ten history since nineteen seventy. The longest since Washington did it in twenty two through twenty four, But it looked like a well balanced attack between Turbo Richard, Charlie Becker and company. Ground and pass, and that defense was lights out once again. Yes, sir. Good afternoon to you. It's a good day to be a Hoosier. It's been a good last twenty four hours or so. Hoosiers go to Rutgers, their premier game of the season, their blackout night. And just totally dominate the Scarlet Knights on their home field. Josh Hoover looking just surgical, 251 yards, four TDs, a couple TDs of Charlie Becker, one to Nick Marsh. This is the first time a Big Ten team since 1995 has had two 100-yard rushers and two 100-yard receivers in the same game. So pretty remarkable performance. IU. Total of 339 total rushing yards on the ground, led by Turbo, 204 yards, bouncing back from that badly sprained ankle he sustained in the game against Northwestern. yeah, good all round performance. I used gotta go to another very hostile environment in Lincoln, Nebraska next week for a date with the Cornhuskers of Nebraska. You mentioned that's the first time since what what year was that? Nineteen five. That a team had two one hundred yard rushers and receivers? Yeah, it was Nebraska. And go figure that's who you're gonna go play, you opens as a nine point favorite. I think it's down to eight and a half now at Nebraska. So Yep, it's a not a double digit favorite. Yep, they're definitely gonna get tested, but it it looks like they're running on all cylinders now. Defense look good. They did give up a couple touchdowns late in the game off some busted coverages and stuff like that. But the only area of of concern for me was probably the secondary for IU. you know, as as they go up against better and better competition. Those guys in the secondary are gonna have to really be getting up on passes deeper in the field. So I didn't keep up with the IU news during the week like you did, but what happened with Richard? I thought that was gonna keep him out multiple weeks and he ended up balling out. Yeah, so came out on, I believe, Monday. Sig came into the press conference and said, Yeah, it's a high ankle sprain, which normally is gonna keep a guy out for two or three weeks, you would think, anyways. But I mean, this guy looked like he was not injured one bit. I mean, he's built on speed and the guy has patience as well, just sees the holes. But I mean, you know, obviously he gets the majority of his yard just absolutely nuking linebackers and D Bs. Yeah, he went for two four, two touchdowns, didn't look like he skipped a beat. And you had BB who had a a nice game. I was surprised they didn't sit him in that game because they were rolling and they were still running him hard in the fourth quarter. Yeah, I mean, up until game time, IU had all four of their running backs on the injury report. The healthiest one, healthiest one was listed turbo as probable. The other ones were either out or questionable. They even had a linebacker who played a lot of running back in high school warming up with the running back. So they were that much of concern. Sounds like the commanders today will get to that. yeah, heck of an effort. I know Rutgers lost their leading running back early in the second quarter, Dylan Lonergun. and that may affected their offense a little bit, And like you said, they're gonna go to Nebraska next Saturday I'm not sure if that's a morning game or not. Gonna be a night game. Okay. They love those night games. Well now that they're good, they're getting primetime games, Yes, sir. Hey, how about your how about your boilers? I was able to catch catch us some of that game actually. Absolutely. Boilers win. Finally, we can celebrate. got the monkey off their back. Pretty embarrassing loss for Illinois, in my opinion. I heard some Illinois alum, and he was claiming that this was the most embarrassing loss in the Bilama era they let go of their defensive coordinator last Sunday. I think we chatted about that. Bobby Hawk. And then Bielema did not say who was gonna be calling the defensive plays all week. And so we didn't find out till game day that the inside linebackers coach, Roger Cooper, was elevated to call defensive plays and that seemed to be a backfire. But Purdue showed up, especially their defense. Kevin Kane, defensive coordinator for Purdue, has not had a good year. This is his second stint with the Boilers. he went in a Minnesota last year and returned. Had about the same stats as he did a couple of years ago with the Boilers. And they showed up. I don't know if it was a really a a turnaround for the Boilers D or if Illinois and especially their their quarterback had, a tough day. Caden Houser just struggled all day. Their line struggled, our defensive front really came through and we ached out a tight one, twenty-four seventeen. Like you said, nineteen game losing streak in the Big Ten. Hadn't won since two thousand twenty three. you asked me about road games. the last road game we won was actually at IU in twenty twenty two, before Sigs got there. So That's crazy. Yeah, it's it's it was a good week in West Lafayette as it well was around the state, but the mo the most shocking thing to me about that game was Purdue giving up what, ten points? Is that is that what they end up giving up? They end up giving up Seventeen. Seventeen, okay. But I mean, considering you know, they had come off giving up fifty two to UCLA and what thirty something to Notre Dame, I mean, pretty pretty remarkable performance from the defensive aspect of it. Yeah, they gave up fifty two to UCLA and forty nine, I think, to Notre Dame. And then the week before, Wake Forest flew up thirty eight on It's been a s real struggle on the defensive end. So good to see the boys win. Maybe that gives them a little momentum, gives Barry Odom some confidence for next week. But he said after the game they just tried to flush away the first few weeks altogether, just kind of start the season over, zero and zero. Now they're one and on that chapter, so we'll see how it goes. Well, you wanna get into today's game? Yeah, how about them Colts? It was it was a battle today. It was a tail of two halves, But you want to get into it first on the good and bend? Yeah. I mean, my my beef, yeah, your beef last week was with Jones. My beef is with him today. I know we ended up pulling out the game in the end, but the guy's awful. Forty-four million dollars, 143 yards, no TDs, an interception, another fumble lost. The guy has seven turnovers. So going into the one o'clock games today leads the league in turnovers for quarterbacks. $44 million. I mean, what what was he doing today? The guy he's not processing the in the pocket, whatsoever. It's like he's his brain's running in slow motion. That first fumble was awful. He had one rusher in him. I don't know why I know they were setting up a screen to the left, but how can he not just step right or step up? I know he's a pure pocket passer. He does have some speed, but with the Achilles injury, maybe he can't move as much as he w he could, but think about all our grades. Brady, Manning, Even Rivers, you know, those guys that are just statues back there, at least they've got the wherewithal to step up or move around a foot or two. I mean, it's either he's gonna drop the ball when he gets hit or he's gonna throw off that back foot and disaster happens then. I just don't understand how he's consistently losing the football in the pocket. You know, friendly fire there on the one with the you know what, our linemen kind of got pushed into him, but it's still I just find it so ridiculous. Ridiculous that this stuff's even happening. I don't even know what to make of the guy. I I mean this is like one of those we won the game, but yet I'm pissed off. I I just I am. The you know, if I I want to really get into it, sauce Gardner and are two trading two first round picks for him. I mean, the guy sucks. People say what they want about opposing teams not targeting him or whatever. I I mean, here's a good one for you. Let's pull this up. I know I shared it with you earlier. Yeah, he gave up two bombs, I know. That were crazy just searching for people. Of course I can't find it right now. But the guy I I don't want to say he's lost out there because he's obviously not, but for paying two first round draft picks, I mean this in terms of the Chris Ballard era, gotta be the second worst trade he's ever made. Or was was the ri Trent Richardson trade? Was that Ryan Grigson? That was Grigson, wasn't it? Okay. So the Sauce Gardner trade is going to go down at all time worst trade in the history of the Chris Ballard era. Well, give it time. It's got more years on that contract. but I agreed. He's not made a pick yet since he got here. He had a pick six last year in his hands. He dropped it. he's not looked like more than an average D B, in my opinion. they talked about He's still really good and they're just staying away from him, but he got picked on a little bit today. Here we go. I found it from next gen stats. Colts cornerback sauce Gardner allowed four receptions for a hundred and seventeen yards and a T D on five targets in coverage against the commanders in week four. The most yards allowed in a game by Gardner in his career according to next gen stats. So I mean terrible. It looks like worse every week. And I know people want to say, yeah, they only throw at him the low percentage of the times. Well, teams are gonna start ripping it at him because That sounds like the Wally stats from week two. Yeah. By the way, he had a nice sack today. I'm gonna get back into DJ a little bit. I think last year it was just a a flash in the pan for Daniel Jones. You know, obviously he came out hot. We started out really hot. And then once he got injured, even when he came back, we we lost. some games, before he got the Achilles torn. But he he struggled in those games and then, you know, I I think he's Back to showing his true colors, very prone to the turnover. he's reverted back to New York Jones. You know, he was Indiana Jones there early last year, as we like to call him. He was the man. We paid him off. I think we're looking at a total rebuild in the upcoming years anyway, so well, it's not like you have anyone in development. Well, let me ask you this as well. With as good as we run the ball, especially today with JT and Seth McGowan getting going, why the hell is Jones throwing the ball 34 times when we're ahead in the ballgame? Because the stats said to do so. I genuinely I guarantee Stike and and Cooter are in there and they're saying, Hey, Washington's number one D of V D VOA against the run. It got torched by Seattle last week with Sam Darnold. Or lock or whoever was throwing. They did. And right out of the gate, even that scripted shit, it was throw, throw, throw. They didn't even give the Taylor really a chance and then him and McGallen got rolling in the second half, This O line, as we talked about last week in the run blocking game, I mean, they are eating people up. So I mean, yeah, we we talked about it. Seattle did not run the ball effectively at all on Washington. But the Colts O line was pushing them around. JT got going. Just shy of a hundred yards, but he had two touchdowns. And, you know, Seth McGowan, again, this guy's getting more of a roll, it seems, every week. And the kid's really stepping up. I'm impressed. he's a twenty five year old rookie, played three different colleges. He's been good at the return game, too. I've been impressed there. let's get to the good stuff today, which I believe is the defense for the second straight week, stepped up, did not look like that defense we saw in week one and two. Now, we could have been fooled the last two weeks. Last week we did not have to face Nico Collins. Houston did not look great on offense at all. That's probably an understatement. And then today, second drive of the game for the Commanders, our boy who has been missing in action finally came and got a sack in Latu. And rolled over on Mariota's right leg. He leaves the game and uncomes in Harold's seventh rounder out of Minnesota and Rutgers. Ethan Calicamenus. Did I get that right? I'm sure the announcers were thrilled when he came in the game. How many times? Calicamenus. How many times they were gonna have to pronounce that? They they should just start calling him AK by the end of the game. Yeah, that would have been a good one. Do you remember Andre Kirlenko? I do. AK forty seven. Utah Jazz. I believe they made him change his number. So they could call him AK forty seven. Yeah. That's all I could think of today. It was like, AK's in the game. Kirlenko. Yeah, I mean, you know, when it when the kid had time, you know, he stepped up into some throws, he made a a you know, really good throw there to trail on Burks. Who people can say what they want, but Sauce got bought up, burned on that for a you know, a deep touchdown. And then that other bomb was Sauce too. When he was rolling, he threw it fifty yards on the run. That was a heck of a throw. But yeah, the kid had no fear. He was fun to watch. Do you see that early spin move? Like you're playing Madden and you hit the you hit the circle button a little too early. Yeah. That was comical. Yeah, he was energetic. even after throwing that early pick, how about that? Our first interception of the year, Jalen Carlisle comes up with a pick, beautiful ball skills there. And after that, he he said, Screw this, I'm going deep every time. He was looking for go routes. I I figured we'd get a few more sacks, but we didn't. That was a unbelievable play by Carly's. He I mean, that was a missile thrown right at him and for him to get it, pick it off, thought that was really impressive. hey, let's give credit where it's due. The big 99 DeForest Buckner. The stats may not show up in the box score, but this guy just absolutely wrecks the run game and sometimes the passing game as well. But sometimes he doesn't even make the tackle. It's because he's busy taking out two O linemen so one of his teammates can get in there in the backfield. He did that multiple times today. He's a beast. He's been easily our MVP of the year, in my opinion. You always look at offensive skill guys, but you know, without Buck, I d I don't know where we'd be. So I'm glad he's healthy again. Everyone had some reservations on how he would come back after next surgery. And he's come back looking as good as ever. Definitely all pro so far. Yeah, he might have been a little might have gone off to a little bit of a slow start, game one, but I mean, these last three games, that dude, he has been all Over the field and his presence has been well felt. Yeah, and most improved player for me has been Tony, how about Adabare? He's he's looked really good. Yes. he was a freak in the combine, I remember coming out, and he really didn't get a whole lot of chances those first two years. And now that we're a little thin on the defensive front, he's he's getting in there and he's he's making plays. Yeah, so when Latu got in there. Atabare and Latu actually split that sack or that's what they have it down as. So yeah. good going by the D line. Great going by the D line. I mean the the Colts secondary though, it's it's a problem every time. I I don't you know, Aaron Rodgers next game. He may just sit back and carve us up because been throwing it mo more than he has in his entire career so far. Yeah, if he throws it three yards at a time. That's he looks like our third down offense all the time, just crossing routes, the Michael Pittman return game. We'll see. We've really benefited from two lackluster offenses the last two weeks. And I don't think Bluesberg is very good at offense myself. So we'll see when we get some powerhouses back in like we saw in weeks one and two. there is a world where we're three and one, man. I'm not saying we look very good, but there is a world where we beat the Chiefs and we are three and one with one bad loss in there. Well, let's let's be honest. I mean, the best game we've played all year was at Kansas City, in my opinion. Barn up. Yeah, I agree. If if Jones takes care of the ball last week, we dominated the Texans. We did. If he didn't have those three turnovers, we should have won by twenty one. But yeah, it would have been interesting today to see if Mariota had stayed in the game. I do think the commanders because they looked good when he was in the game initially. And then, you know, once the kid had to come in. I wanted to see Wankoff come in the four four string tight end. He played a little high school quarterback. I was like, Bring him on. Emergency. quarterback. They didn't have a third quarterback dressed. It's like, do you know how to hand the ball off? So I mean, hey, again, the Colts benefited from another injury, but I know we know injuries happen. Nico Collins in the process of going off on the Cowboys right now. We didn't have to face him last week. And then today Mariota goes out of the game, started the game strong and then, you know, we get the the kid from Rutgers in there. And While he made some good throws, we pretty much teed off on him. We are recording this during the typical slate of the early games. We've already seen two significant injuries on the screens up here with Saquon Barkley and Jamar Chase. So injuries do happen to the best of us. So we will see if we can continue to stay healthy. It has been a good start for the Colts health wise. Some kudos here. JT, how about six international touchdowns? To lead the way since international games started. He seems to love going overseas. His best rushing performance since they went to Germany last year, where he went for a couple bills and some touchdowns that first sauce game. but obviously he likes to go across the pond and take the reins. The the other guy who's been nails has been Spencer Schrader. He's eleven for eleven now and Besides that blemish on his first kick of the year, that botched extra point. He's been perfect, man. Remember, we had a Martine Grammatica Automatica. That's what Spencer Schrader is. The guy's automatic. He's been dynamic, been really good in that kicking in. So let's hope that continues going forward. He could be a real weapon for us. He's been a weapon on my fantasy team. I know that. Breaking news, unfortunately. The Jaguars. Just stopped the Bengals on a fourth and ten play about a half a yard short. So the Jags are gonna move to three and one. So we're not in first place anymore. That's what you're telling me. No first place for the close. how's our Texans looking? Are the Cowboys gonna come through? Texans lost? C D Lamb with a game winning T. Ooh, the and four Texans. That's beautiful. yeah, I'm looking at this Jacksonville game now. I assume the Titans lost. To the Ravens. I did see Lamar went out. They did. All right. Well, the season's not dead, so let's let's keep a positive attitude. in Pittsburgh next week. We get old man Rogers, just like what is he, forty one now? Something like that. He's not quite as old as Rivers was last year, but this is last year. I mean He looked really good against the Patriots. Not this but last week. He absolutely carved him up. So well they had that comeback against the or against the Browns before they finally lost it on Thursday. Yep. Both are getting kinda hosed. Did you send me that on the the breaks that these other teams are getting facing the Colts? Steelers will have a have a ten day 10 day break, and then I believe the two opponents after that are gonna be coming off buys. Is that right? That sounds right. So I don't know how the NFL overlooks that they send us to London, which is always a disadvantage when you come back, and then you got those three games right ahead of you. Leave it to the NFL to to handicap the Colts like like we need any any more handicaps. All right. Two game winnings week for our Colts. Let's see if they can continue that next week. how about some basketball? the Fever, who we have not chatted about much on Who's Your Beef. They are out in a first round exit to the Las Vegas Aces. Ran into a juggernaut there in the MVP Asia Wilson. Interesting. had a fan interaction Tuesday night in Gain Bridge. There was rumor that she might have got suspended, but W NBA smarter than that. They're not gonna suspend their best player on a on a league that struggles to get ratings anyway for a elimination game. So you gotta you gotta bring the tickets in, Asia Wilson versus Caitlin Clark. Now I am surprised she did not get ejected that game. Technically, you can't go into the stands at all, no matter what the unless you're diving for a ball. And she was certainly in the stands, even though it was a standing room only behind the bucket. But nevertheless, fever go down. Any thoughts on the fever? Do you think think Stephanie White's safe with her job? I mean it was it was a it was a successful season, Yeah, I look there's this fever team has got so much freaking talent. Said it been saying it for a long time, but they've got to move one of their bigs. And I believe if I'm the GM Leah Boston needs to get moved. shell of herself since Caitlyn got there. She has lost a bunch of weight, which I know is, you know, typically good for, you know, females. But however, in the position that she plays, she needs to have a little more weight on her to bruise and and bang down low with, you know, some of these other gals. And I just feel like she's more of a More like a stretch three or small four right now, which isn't great. Also, yes, my opinion is that Stephanie White should be gone. However, as much as that we want to say the actual GM runs this team, Caitlin Clark runs this team and she will determine who the coach is. So if Caitlin Clark wants Stephanie White to stay, Stephanie White will be the coach next year. She runs this team. People say whatever the hell they want, but Caitlin Clark, if she's not happy, the fever will make her happy because they've got to do whatever they can to keep her in Indiana their entire career. Or else butts will not be in seats, period. Would you say she is the face of Indiana sports right now, or would you put Halliburton up there? I mean, you're probably not gonna like my answer, but I would say Signetti's probably the face of Indiana sports right now. Yeah, that's true. That's a good point. From a state perspective, I mean, how Burton was when the Pacers made the run to the finals, I mean, he was all we could talk about, right? Taylor, Jonathan, I I don't the as we've talked about a couple of times on here, the guy doesn't get enough props around the the NFL. In my opinion, Taylor's a top three or four running back in the NFL and I mean, he hardly gets any kudos. but yeah. Caitlin Clark, I mean, she's absolute dynamic. you can't say enough about her efforts. I don't know. I did watch the end of the game the other night. It looked like the fever were dead to rights, down about nine points under two minutes ago. Caitlin's never gonna quit. She even took a shot to the lip tooth area, was bleeding, went out you know, to wipe it off and everything, came back in, then she made a dumb move and she showed the rep, lifted up her lip, and ref said, Get out of here, you got blood. And so I was like, what are you doing? I I know she was trying to make a point because the fever did challenge the play to see whether it was should be leveled up to a flagrant. and it didn't. But yeah. yeah, she's she's a tough one. So she'll hopefully be around for years to come. And we get a title. Yeah, one more thing on this this fever team. I just really think they have a lot of good pieces and for some reason Kelsey Mitchell, I mean, she's she broke, I believe, Ajah Wilson's record for most points scored in a in a season this year. But she doesn't seem to show up when the lights are brightest. So, I don't know. They got some soul searching to do and whether that's with Stephanie White and the same crew that they have next season. I'm not sure, but I think they gotta do something. Well, I think you know, the fever dominated the headlines on and off the court all year, and we didn't really hear White backing up her players a lot throughout the season with all that conflict. So we'll see how Clark feels about it and the GM and the city and we'll go from there. But looking forward to next season with them. There's always an exciting watch. but let's get around the state. What you got anything for me from from the high school ranks? Yes. We had my alma mater Brownsburg taking on the Zionsville Eagles. Another smash job for the Bulldogs. Thirty eight to three the Bulldogs win over Zionsville on Friday night. Warren and Lawrence North that was the matchup of the night. High scoring affair 90 total points in the game. 90. Defense optional. 53. Do you have the over on that? You're right. 53 37. Warren wins that game. in other action, Westfield beat Avon 49 to 16. And Carmel with a big win over Ben Davis, 28 to 24 at the end of that ball game. I said last week, don't count Carmel out. State tournament's coming up here. But it it seems as though Is there a is there a collision course between the undefeated up top, Brownsburg and Warren? I I think that that seems to be where things are going. But you you just never know. in the state tournament, it's the greatest and worst thing about the Indiana State tournament. One mistake and you're gone. Doesn't matter what sport it is. It looks like Warren's running back had a monster game over three hundred yards, six touchdowns. Something crazy. There's just no room for error in any of the tournaments in Indiana high school sports. You better you better bring your best each and every game in the tournament. Excellent. Well, that's gonna do it for Who's Your Beef? shout out to Taylor Swivley, we mentioned her a couple of weeks ago. She did three Pete in the Women's Girls Golf State Championship and Zionsville won the title. They got a heck of a team there. So first three peat since our high school days, the late nineties, when Lee Ann Harden. Lee Ann Harden at Mar out of Martinsville won three straight school. So very cool. Give a shout out to my Hamilton Southeastern Royals girls golf team coming in fourth. Good finish for the Royals. Wow. Excellent. I used to teach a couple of their girls Yeah, good for them. They always have some talent, and I do believe they'll have a good amount of them coming back next year, so and I told my wife, quick shout out to her high school Andrean, which is out of Gary, they came down to Noblesville and beat Garen Catholic. they're seven. Hey, and speaking of speaking of Hamilton County, HSC Royals football team gets a thirty three to nothing win over Noblesville. And Noblesville is they're kind of ho hum, barely beat Fishers, but This kind of came out of nowhere for Southeastern, if I'm gonna be honest. So maybe there's maybe there's a late season run. Yeah. Very good. Well, we'll look forward to next week. Hoosier's got a test. Purdue's got to play Minnesota, which has been surprisingly good. they just knocked off Michigan. So that'd be a tough test for the Boilers. And then we talked about our Colts heading to Pittsburgh where they usually do not play well. But hopefully momentum carries us to a win next week. So until then, you guys have a great week and we'll see you then. Take care.
