Colts end losing streak and beat the Texans!

SLICK: Quentin said, hey, let's go win this thing. This will we practice. And we practice two minutes every Wednesday, those in-game situations full speed. And obviously hitting the big ball there and there to tread there at the end was huge to get us down in there and then to go finish it with Spence kicking the field goal was awesome. Welcome in to Who's Your Beef? We just witnessed the Colts win nineteen to seventeen over the Houston Texans to get their first victory of the year. Well, guys, what we saw today was definitely an improvement. And win is a win, I guess, So good morning, Jason, how are you?

Jason: Well, doing well. It's nice to speak with you after Colts W.

SLICK: absolutely. yeah, I got up this morning early, left Flagstaff, Arizona, had about a three hour drive to get down here, just made it, put on the TV, I was expecting Stroud to carve us up, and boy was I wrong. First quarter defense really stepped up today. they really did a number on the running game to start and Stroud, they looked ready to play. We did not see the same Deficiencies as we did the last two weeks. There wasn't a whole lot of miscommunication before the snap. We saw much better tackling, I thought, particularly from the linebacking and secondary corps. And boy, those two dudes up front, Buckner and Atabore, got after it today.

Jason: This Colts defense definitely showed up today. I was super impressed with the effort. I actually, I think I told you and several people, some reason I had a good feeling going into today. Obviously, Nico Nico Collins was out for the Texans, which is their deep threat, so that hurts them immensely. But this Colts defense did a phenomenal job. We held Stroud to 167 yards passing. We held David Montgomery to 33 yards passing. rushing and we only gave up 17 points. So as we know, more times than not the Colts are gonna win ball games when we when we do that. Yeah we coordinate

SLICK: Yeah, we only scored nineteen ourselves when we won. But yeah, quite the contrast from from two weeks ago or the last two weeks, Colts gave up two hundred and twenty-three yards total, about half or actually more than half of what they gave up to the Ravens and the Chiefs respectively. a hundred and fifty three passing yards for Houston and only seventy rushing yards like you mentioned. And we even lost the turnover battle three to nothing, with Janiel Jones, who we'll get to in a little bit. fumbling twice on sacks, strip sacks and throwing one of the worst interceptions I've seen in a while. But we overcame that, won the time of possession handily, thirty-five to twenty-four. We were pretty good on third down, seven of fifteen where they were four for eleven. all in all pretty pretty good on the defensive end. So hopefully we can tap into that as we Moving to next week.

Jason: Yeah, we gonna go across the pond face the Washington Commanders. Marcus Mariota stepping in for the Commanders today, leading them to a victory.

SLICK: if you would have told me

Jason: So we will

SLICK: that Mariota, Winston, and Errol Donald were all starting this week, I thought you're crazy, right? Sounds like ten years ago.

Jason: Absolutely. Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota both starting quarterbacks in 2026 in the NFL is quite crazy. going back on the Colts, pretty good all around effort. Obviously the defense was a massive improvement. The offense we were clicking in the short passing game. Josh Downs was really good again. five catches, 77 yards. Keenan Allen with a big touchdown catch. Tyler Warren, nine catches. just making pretty big plays. He did drop one there, but overall he's he's just a phenomenal impact on our offense. And JT, who's been kind of the workhorse for the first two weeks. He actually didn't do that much and we still, you know, overcame that. I believe he had a little bit of a growing tweak in the second half. so our backup running back came in, made a couple nice plays that McGowan.

SLICK: I like McAllen.

Jason: McGallan. He is he's he's definitely Getting better and better. He's gonna get some reps, probably see some more time on the field. So any rate, encouraged.

SLICK: the Texans I thought executed their game plan really well on us. the first two weeks they could not stop JT. I thought the Texans definitely had the personnel to do that. And then when they got into passing downs they could sick both are all pro defensive ends on us. Hunter and Anderson teed off on our tackles today. especially Anderson who had two and a half sacks on his own. he's a beast over there, man.

Jason: He's an absolute game wrecker. no disrespect to Jalen Travis, the right tackle of the Colts, but he looked like a turnstyle today. Just letting Will Anderson go right around him. three fumbles by Daniel Jones. Two of them lost. So Will Anderson and Crew on the defensive line definitely causing havoc.

SLICK: Well I didn't ask you, but I'm gonna answer this myself. Who's your beef with? My beef's with Daniel Jones today. I was not too happy

Jason: yeah.

SLICK: with our forty-four million dollar a year quarterback. I thought he did not play well at all. And forget the two fumbles. One of those he just got rocked. The other one was definitely his fault, and then that interception was nuts. But what I really noticed out of DJ today was A really slow release point and indecision. when he can step back into a three to five step drop and then be able to step into it and unload that thing, I definitely think he's could be a top ten quarterback. But when he gets off script at all, if he has to move laterally or kind of throw off that back foot like we saw off that pick, he is not good, man. He is not good. But today mentally,

Jason: Absolutely.

SLICK: which is where he has to live because he's not the most physically gifted guy, but if if he is slow on decision making and granted maybe some of our guys weren't getting open all the time, but he's gotta get rid of the ball. He just has to.

Jason: Correct. And this reminds me of another Hoosier quarterback, down in Bloomington, Josh Hoover, watching him the first four weeks of the season. Whenever he does not get his weight through the the throw, and he's off the back foot, that ball floats, chance for interceptions all day long. We've got to step into those throws. And I know these guys are playing against some of the fastest, fiercest competitors in the world, but these guys are also, especially in Jones. getting paid millions upon millions of dollars to be able to compete at the highest level. So some of those throws today, absolutely unacceptable from from my perspective.

SLICK: Yeah, well like I said, when he gets time in the pocket and can step up, he's very accurate, he's on point. But we just gotta put all those pieces together. Defense showed up today. as you mentioned, next week we got some breakfast football. we will kick off at nine thirty in that toilet of a stadium where the Spurs play in Tottenham, in North London there, which we've had Pretty good luck in the past in these international games, I would say. So hopefully Washington, the commanders are flying high after their victory. They were and two today and we're facing the flying high two and Super Bowl champ Seahawks and beat them. So hopefully they can party a little too hard this week.

Jason: I d I did catch some clips of that game and the Commander's secondary is definitely very susceptible. Jay Jackson Smith and Jigba absolutely cooked them over the middle. Darnold was carving them up. So I think there's gonna be a lot of opportunity for Jones in the passing game. I believe the Commanders did a pretty good job on the Seahawks running game. obviously we'll look to get JT rolling again, but Daniel Jones is really gonna have to step up in that game next weekend and be a lot better than he was today.

SLICK: Absolutely. Washington defense looked really good. I'm gonna have to get up super early. That is six thirty A. my time. So we will we'll get after it. hopefully we can come back from across the pond five hundred in this pathetic division we are in. So we've got two and three teams in the Texans and the Titans. Jags looked like the class of the division. They put in on the Patriots today, but that may have been a little of Drake May playing. He did not look good.

Jason: s let's go back to the star of the game, who fifteen minutes before the game apparently tweaked his groin and Spencer Schrader, the Colts

SLICK: our Notre Dame guy, huh?

Jason: absolute bomber of a kicker. I mean this guy tweaked his groin, Rigoberto Sanchez comes out for the opening kickoff and I'm thinking, great. The What are we gonna do if we got a field goal? I know Rigo can probably hit some chip shots and whatnot, but can't depend on him for anything probably outside of thirty five yards. But then all of a sudden, our first attempt, Strader comes in and that thing looked like it was good from sixty yards, which is probably Yeah, that thing was nails. So

SLICK: Yeah, that thing was nails. But I told you early on in that game, I texted you, this would be known as the Schrader game, didn't I? For a different reason, 'cause I didn't think he was coming back.

Jason: You did. You did.

SLICK: And I might have been freaking out 'cause he is my fantasy kicker and that worked out pretty good at the end, You mentioned

Jason: I was

SLICK: you mentioned Mr. Hoover down in Bloomington. you wanna talk about the Hoosiers a little bit? they got another win, they're four and all in the season, twenty straight wins. They hosted Northwestern, won twenty-nine twenty-three, kind of a tail of two halves though. I did not watch it, I know you did, but it looked like the defense dominated the first half, pitching another shutout, and then they gave up twenty-three in the second. But the big news, it seems like, Turbo Richard, went down and it could be kind of a high ankle sprain,

Jason: Yes. Lee BB with 203 yards on the ground for I.U. Absolutely phenomenal performance from him in the offensive line. This was not a pretty game from IU. However, let's give credit to Northwestern. If Somebody gave me example yesterday. If this was Alabama versus South Carolina, and Alabama won that game 29 to 23 over South Carolina, everybody would have been giving them props. But it's Northwestern and these IU faithful, like we kind of talked about last week, that have only been fans for say two or three years, maybe even just the Sig era, have these expectations that we're gonna blow everybody out. And I think I told you all last Monday I hit the spread of 23 and a half when that line first dropped on Sunday evening. I knew that was way too much. I watched a lot of that Colorado Northwestern game up in Evanston, and Northwestern looked apart. Now the IU defense came out and played really, really well in the first half of the game. We had Kellen Wyatt back. We had Stephen Daly back. They were granted a temporary injunction against this 2022 ruling. and it's still not fully settled. But Steven Daly is an absolute game record, and that guy was in the backfield so much in the first half and in the second half as well. The difference between the first half and the second half is Childs, the Northwestern quarterback. He started they started to move the pocket for him. He started to scramble. He extended plays. And then himself along with Luke Dennickey and Griffin Wilde, they just went kind of nuts on the I.U. secondary. The IU secondary definitely fell apart. Now, I will say, IU had a lot of pressure on him, and he scrambled for his life several times and made a lot made some magic happen. But at the end of the day, Hoosiers were We're challenged. They come out, like you said, with a 29-23 victory. They'll be at Rutgers next Saturday. I believe that is a night game as well. And I belie Rutgers is is obviously going to be up for that game. They gave USC one hell of a game two weeks ago at their place. after they got Rutgers, they play out Nebraska. Then they have Ohio State at home, and then they go to Michigan. you got the gauntlet coming up here. And they he's obviously not gonna let them overlook anybody. But yeah, the big news of the day, Turbo Richard, high ankle sprain that was received on a late hit out of bounds that was not called by the refs. And it was a disgusting tackle. I legitimately thought he had torn his ACL, Achilles, whatever it might have been, because he was down in agony. so I will settle with a high ankle sprain, just praying that he can somehow be back for let's hope the Ohio State game. but yeah, Lee B B filling in. Kobe Martin's still probably not gonna be back for another two to three games when he had a broken forearm. So I you is Lee B B and then a freshman,

SLICK: So we'll see what they can do at Ruckers. They've got a night game next Saturday night, kickoff at eight PM. Meanwhile, up north, we had a battle between Purdue and Notre Dame, and what a bloodbath that was. I did watch that one and unfortunately my boilers did not show up. so get this, they won time of possession. in the first half?

Jason: Made it.

SLICK: They did. And they were down thirty-five nothing at half. we we gave their kudos last week when they played UCLA and

Jason: Mm-hmm.

SLICK: they put up thirty eight points and Braun had thrown for three hundred and something yards. He threw for one eleven this week. And it just it was really ugly, man. They couldn't even get Easy Boy going. and Notre Dame, who has not run the ball particularly well this year after losing love and price to the NFL. They ran all over Purdue.

Jason: I I saw bits and pieces of it and like I said when we did the pod on Monday, I I liked Purdue and the points, just being at home at Ross Aid and they had shown that they could put points up on the scoreboard. But every time I I tuned in, it was like you said, Notre Dame rumbling down the field and Purdue Seemed like Braun was running for his life in the passing game. That's basically what I got out of it.

SLICK: they had some pretty interesting comments from head coach Barry Odom. He came out and and pretty much said we're not spending enough money, so I don't know if you know this, but they ranked last in football spending of all the big ten teams and I don't mean how there are now. Is there eighteen? It's something silly.

Jason: I bel I believe it's eighteen.

SLICK: So they're last. So they're spending less than Minnesota, Northwestern, you name it. And It's kind of a fine line you've gotta walk as a head coach. You can't really s ask for more money. Expect to like keep your job, but you gotta you gotta make it noted, hey, this isn't all on me either. I don't have the right guys for the job here. We're playing against multimillion dollar athletes and they

Jason: Right.

SLICK: haven't really played the big boys yet. I mean Wake Forest, okay, U C L A, whatever. Notre Dame's good. We saw what happened, but Luckily, they don't have to play. I don't think they play Ohio State, Michigan,

Jason: Wake Forest had a big win at

SLICK: I know.

Jason: ranked Louisville. So the Boilers

SLICK: Former Purdue Coach Brahm couldn't get the j job done.

Jason: other than yesterday against Notre Dame, the Boilers have looked apart for the the most

SLICK: For a one and three team.

Jason: obviously being on the other side. I I do think this Purdue team does have some talent on it. And they've shown that they can compete with some good good ball clubs. So I'm just gonna change

SLICK: They're gonna be in the cellar again. I hate to say it.

Jason: because obviously being eight last in the Big Ten and in football NIL, you gotta figure they're up there.

SLICK: Yeah, and that's one of the reasons we brought in a new A D is to raise funding and maybe put that as a bigger priority which is great. You know, it's obviously one of the best universities in the world as far as education. so hopefully there's a lot of thirsty alum out there that would like a little bit more out of the athletic program, particularly football, I know, because we've seen it before. we went to a Rose Bowl, that's been twenty five years ago now, and we've made the national title game in basketball, so it is possible. There's there's much more parity in college sports than there used to be. It's not just the blue buds anymore, which is great.

Jason: It's impossible if some some big alums wanna wanna step in there and and throw some money towards the the football program and let Odom go out there and be able to throw some dollars So

SLICK: Purtou historically does have some top end talent. so the ceiling on f few of those guys has been really high. I mean, we constantly have success in the NFL, but the floor is really low on the other guys on the you

Jason: Right. Absolutely.

SLICK: know, on the whole roster. So you get your holes exposed pretty quickly with teams that know what they're doing. So

Jason: So what's what's the schedule hold for the boilers next?

SLICK: they are at Illinois,

Jason: Illinois fired their their defensive coordinator. which is Yes.

SLICK: Defensive coordinator, So it can be done early in the season, which is where they hang their hat usually. So we will see. That's probably not a good thing for Purdue, be my guess. But that game is going to be at four fifteen Saturday, a line eye by ten is what I saw. And then Notre Dame, four and is going to play Bill Belichick's UNC, Tar Heels. And they are gonna be

Jason: Okay.

SLICK: playing at noon. And I believe they're favored by twenty one or twenty and a half at the moment.

Jason: Is that in South Bend?

SLICK: No, that's actually down there.

Jason: Okay.

SLICK: we did have a big high school game this weekend, did we not?

Jason: Yeah, we did. We had my alumni, number one Brownsburg, taking on number two Westfield and Brownsburg with another romp, putting up thirty-eight points on the number two ranked team in the state. So this br thirty eight fourteen

SLICK: Was it thirty eight fourteen?

Jason: thirty eight fourteen. This Brownsburg team just keeps on getting better as the year goes on. I don't I r they're gonna have to have an extremely off game, turn the ball over a bunch of times, bunch of penalties.

SLICK: Do you think do you even think injury could detour at this point? They have like two players that could go down that could maybe change the landscape of that?

Jason: That's definitely a possibility. I don't fully know their depth chart, but I would imagine

SLICK: I assume they're pretty deep at everywhere.

Jason: They are. They are. I know their sophomore class is extremely good, so I'm sure they have another quarterback behind their starter that could step in. but right now there's no loss in sight for Brownsburg. We also on Friday we had number three Warren, thirty-one to twenty-eight over Pike, and then also number five Lawrence North, twenty eight to twenty one over Carmel. That is Carmel's now, I believe, fourth loss on the season.

SLICK: Fourth loss.

Jason: So Carmel has played all four of those teams that they've lost to very tough. And I'll never count them out in the state tournament as one of my good buddies was on their coaching staff for a long time and they always tend to peak in the state tournament, but I just don't think as of right now anybody has anything for this Brownsburg team.

SLICK: Did you happen

Jason: I did

SLICK: to see the score of the Goshen Plymouth game?

Jason: I did not.

SLICK: Five to two.

Jason: Five to two.

SLICK: And the only scores in regulation were two safeties. Talk about a defensive battle.

Jason: I mean that just had to be a

SLICK: Brutal.

Jason: a brutal watch. Because l let me just let me just put it to you like this. Just watching IU be up five to nothing on Northwestern the other night. was a pretty brutal watch from an offensive perspective. So I can only imagine f

SLICK: Go up. There's a couple of safeties. We and then they go to overtime and I don't know how long it took before Goshen kicked that field goal, but I saw that score and I was like, baseball's not in season. Is that a soccer score? What is what's going on here?

Jason: I mean that has to be one of those things that they call scorgami, like one that's never happened.

SLICK: Yeah, I'm sure it's one of a kind. Absolutely.

Jason: That at least at least in the state of Indiana, maybe there was a five two game somewhere. But that is that's absolutely crazy for that score to be able to happen in football.

SLICK: It's pretty cool.

Jason: Yeah, that is.

SLICK: And that'll note, I would like to bring up the Pacers finally. We are getting ready to start preseason. Did you see where the first preseason game is on October seventh?

Jason: I did not. Where are we playing at?

SLICK: Tyrese going back home. They're gonna be playing the Minnesota Timberwolves at Iowa State.

Jason: they're going to Ames. I love it. I love it. Okay.

SLICK: Yep, going to Ames, Iowa. I think that's a Wednesday night to open the preseason. Pritchard came out and said all systems go for Halliburton. He will not be limited. So hopefully that's all systems go. We'll see how Zubak fits into that lineup. We'll get more into basketball in the month of October and I'm planning on doing a pacers preview before the season starts here on Who's Your Beef

Jason: I have heard nothing but rave reviews about how Hal Burton has looked in practice and everything that's that's going on from some people close to the team. they said he looks better than ever. So with the the lineup that they have assembled for this year, yeah, like you said, all systems go. I believe this team is Probably a top three team in the East,

SLICK: odds makers are not making them that. They I love these type of seasons. They forget that two years ago we were within a half of an injury of maybe taking down the thunder and winning a title. And because of that, obviously we were garbage last year and a lot of that was strategy. so they're putting us pretty low on title odds, division odds, wins is pretty low.

Jason: I'd love to see what the over-under is for season wins because I'm sure they got it probably what high forties maybe?

SLICK: I believe when I looked I thought I saw forty four and a half.

Jason: That's that's too low. I

SLICK: That's too low.

Jason: I don't see this Pacers team not going at least what forty five and thirty seven. That seem as long as they stay healthy, in which the Pacers don't approach winning fifty games. Fifty and thirty

SLICK: Yeah.

Jason: fifty and thirty two.

SLICK: Early early just big look at it. the only thing that really worries me is depth. I saw we did sign James Johnson. I don't know how he's not retired yet, but that's freaking cool.

Jason: I did see that. The the the enforcer.

SLICK: And they were talking they have another slot. that they could fit in. They were talking about signing Nimhart's brother, maybe.

Jason: I did see that, Ryan Mhart. Mm-hmm. Yeah.

SLICK: So that would be cool

Jason: lot of lot of veteran presence on that team. They've got some young talent in there as well. it'll be interesting to see where Braden fits into the picture. I still think I'll be able to see him up here up the road, about five minutes away from me, playing for the Noblesville boom this year, which would be pretty cool.

SLICK: Yeah, hopefully he draws in some fans up there.

Jason: Yeah. I think it'll be a huge draw if they are to put him on that team. The bottom line is if he's not gonna see guaranteed minutes in the rotation, then you might as well put him to the G League.
